Character Name: Joseph "Shades" Mirlano
Age: 27
History: -Joseph grew up in Hoboken, New Jersey. His mother was a strict and unhappy woman who complained about everything in her life. His father, being gone more than he was there, had been a source of joy for Joseph and his two brothers which their mother lacked to provide. His father was always an idol in his eyes and he wanted to grow up to be just like him until, at the age of nine, Joseph found out what his father did for a living. He snuck out of bed one night when his father was leaving to return to his "job". Joseph followed him to a small convenience store where he witnessed him threaten and beat up the manager over money owed to him. It didn't take long to register in his mind that his dad was involved in organized crime or a gang of some sort.
It felt as though the image he had held of his dad for so long just crashed and burned that very night. He did his best to avoid both his parents at that point and was out more than he was at home. Joseph made friends with a guy named Tommy and a young girl he'd known from school, Angie. They would hang out all of the time and the fact that each had familial problems strengthened their bond.
Seven years later his father had died. Killed by thugs who were looking for some quick cash. At least that's what he was told. However, Joseph knew better. He knew the business his father dealt in and it didn't surprise him that things ended up like they did. What did surprise him was when his older brother, Pasquale, revealed everything about their father. Being that Joseph was coming of age, his father had been planning to get him into the family business as well with Pasquale. Scared and clearly angry with the situation, Joseph packed his things and ran away. He stayed with Tommy and they both agreed to leave New Jersey once they could persuade Angie as well. It didn't take too much effort as she couldn't wait to leave either and so they used one of her father's many cars to head out on the open road.
Over the course of the next five years the three of them travelled far and wide. Taking in new sights every day. Reinventing themselves in every way possible. When Joseph got the call that his mother had passed away from a weak heart, he returned to New Jersey to attend the funeral. After a talk with his brother Pasquale, who had been in on the business as a foot soldier, he decided to get involved with it and came to terms with his issues towards it all.
